À l’aube d’une ère nouvelle, le légendaire tueur Battosai décide de se retirer. Dix ans plus tard, un homme doté d’une incroyable dextérité fait son apparition. Ce combattant hors pair qui se fait appeler Kenshin rôde tel un vagabond sur les routes du Japon.
