Synopsis
Victor Hermann, un jeune athlète américain, rejoint l'URSS avec ses parents afin d'aider à la construction d'une usine d'automobile. Socialiste idéaliste, Victor croit fermement que l'Union Soviétique est le meilleur endroit pour la classe ouvrière. D'abord auréolé de toutes les gloires, Victor va très vite se heurter à l'aveuglement des officiels lorsque ceux-ci lui demandent de renoncer à sa citoyenneté américaine. Devant son refus, il est jugé pour trahison et envoyé au Goulag. Il y restera 40 ans.
