Synopsis
De nos jours, en Alabama, Evelyn Couch, femme au foyer, mène une existence monotone jusqu'à ce qu'elle rencontre Ninny Threadgood, une dame âgée extraordinaire, qui va lui redonner goût à la vie. Celle-ci lui raconte sa jeunesse, 60 ans plus tôt, à Whistle Stop, petite bourgade du Sud des États-Unis. L'histoire de Ninny est celle de l'amitié entre deux femmes: Idgie Threadgoode, forte tête, indépendante, véritable garçon manqué, et Ruth Jamison, douce et remarquable cuisinière. Mariée à Franck Bennett, un homme violent, Ruth le quittera, sauvée par Idgie, et s'enfuiera avec elle. Les deux femmes décideront d'ouvrir un restaurant dans lequel elles servent des beignets chauds de tomates vertes. Mais Bennett n'a pas dit son dernier mot...
