Synopsis
Londres, fin du XVIIIème siècle. Nell, une jeune femme spirituelle et audacieuse, protegée du riche Lord Mortimer, s'intéresse aux conditions d'enfermement inhumaines des malades mentaux au St. Mary's of Bethlehem Asylum (Bedlam). Le directeur de l'établissement va alors user de son influence auprès de Mortimer pour faire enfermer Nell à l'asile…
