Dans le train qui l'emmène à New York, Tony Hunter, star à la dérive de la comédie musicale, surprend une conversation entre deux voyageurs, qui l'estiment fini. Abattu, Tony retrouve cependant son optimisme lorsqu'il aperçoit, sur le quai de la gare, une foule de journalistes et de photographes. Hélas, ceux-ci sont venus accueillir Ava Gardner, qui voyageait dans le même train. Le moral de Tony est au plus bas. Il retrouve enfin ses amis, Lester et Lily Marton, qui lui racontent le scénario d'une prochaine comédie musicale, dont la mise en scène sera signée par Cordova, la nouvelle coqueluche de Broadway. L'artiste monte des spectacles résolument dramatiques et pompeux...
