Synopsis
Le tristement célèbre massacre de Peterloo eut lieu en 1819, lorsqu’un rassemblement pacifique en faveur de la démocratie à St. Peter’s Field à Manchester. Il reste l’un des épisodes les plus sanglants de l’histoire britannique. Ce jour-là, la police chargea une foule de plus de 60 000 personnes réunies pour exiger des réformes politiques et protester contre la montée de la pauvreté. De nombreux manifestants furent tués et des centaines d’autres blessés, provoquant des manifestations dans tout le pays, mais aussi de nouvelles répressions du gouvernement. Ce moment déterminant de l’histoire britannique mena à la création du journal The Guardian.
