Dans l'Angleterre moyenâgeuse, un écrivain, Chaucer, assiste dans une auberge au récit d'une série d'histoires drôles et érotiques racontées par des pèlerins venus en foule à la cathédrale de Canterbury. Il se réjouit de ce qu'il voit et entend, prend des notes et laisse aller son imagination. Des sketches à rire dans une Angleterre médiévale baignée par une lumière qui évoque les maîtres flamands, entre réalisme et fantastique.
