Synopsis
Malgré son attachement à Nell, son amie d'enfance, John Shawnessy, poète et professeur, épouse Susanna Drake, sans savoir qu'elle souffre de troubles mentaux. La guerre de Sécession éclate, John sert dans l'armée de l'Union tandis que Susanna franchit les lignes ennemies et retourne dans le Sud.
