Synopsis
Les pilotes de ligne Glen Singer, surnommé Lucky, et Connie Phipps sont amants et ne se réjouissent guère d'avoir à partager le cockpit avec l'arrogant capitaine Bouchard, venu évaluer le travail de Glen. Peu après le décollage, à la suite d'une erreur de la tour de contrôle, leur appareil entre en collision avec un avion de tourisme, entraînant le dérèglement des instruments de bord. L'avion de Lucky prend soudain de l'altitude de façon spectaculaire et incontrôlable. Une décision de dernière chance est alors prise : faire appel à l'armée pour qu'un avion de chasse ouvre le feu sur la queue de l'appareil, freinant ainsi l'infernale ascension...
