Synopsis
Eddie Felson est un brillant joueur de billard. Il se rend à New York en compagnie de son manager et rencontre le légendaire champion, Minnesota Fats, poulain de Bert Gordon. Minnesota gagne après une nuit de combat acharné. Au petit matin, Eddie, ivre, rencontre une jeune femme désœuvrée et alcoolique avec laquelle il se met a vivre. Sarah va mettre sa vie en jeu pour l'aider mais il n'a finalement besoin que d'une victoire.
