The city philistine Domna Platonovna-a merchant of lace, and sometimes... and "live goods" - is engaged in pimping. Fate confronts her with a young intelligent woman-a noblewoman, a colonel, Lekanida Petrovna, whose difficult life trials led to a moral decline.
