En 1939, dans un théâtre de Varsovie, un jeune lieutenant aviateur quitte chaque soir sa place pour filer dans la loge de la belle Maria Tura, dès que Joseph Tura, le mari, attaque le grand monologue de Hamlet, « to be or not to be ». Mis dans la confidence, Tura accepte d’aider sa femme et le lieutenant dans sa délicate mission. Un agent nazi, le professeur Siletzky, a réussi à s’approprier la liste des familles des pilotes polonais cantonnés en Grande-Bretagne. Le lieutenant Sobinsky a pour mission d’intercepter cette liste avant qu’elle ne devienne une redoutable arme de chantage entre les mains de la Gestapo…
