Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Au cours d'un raid aérien sur les Philippines, le sous-marin américain « Le Tigre des Mers » est gravement touché, avant même d'avoir jamais pris la mer. L'amirauté, décidée à mettre le bâtiment au rebut, accorde pourtant l'autorisation à son commandant, Matt Sherman, de le remettre en état. Nick Holden, un jeune lieutenant faisant preuve de beaucoup d'ingéniosité, se charge de l'affaire, tant et si bien que le sous-marin, repeint en rose bonbon, est bientôt prêt à naviguer. Au cours d'une escale, 6 infirmières de l'armée, coupées de leur unité, sont recueillies à bord, à la plus grande joie de l'équipage…
