Cleve Marshall, assistant du procureur de Los Angeles, enquête sur une affaire de vol de bijoux et sur le meurtre de leur propriétaire. Au cours de ses investigations, il fait la connaissance de la séduisante Thelma Jordon, la nièce de la victime. Les deux jeunes gens tombent amoureux, mais Marshall découvre rapidement que Thelma est la maîtresse du gangster Tony Laredo.
